The College Hotel, Amsterdam

At the start of a project I like to gather information about a clients’s lifestyle and preferences.  One question I ask, do you have a favorite restaurant and/or hotel?  The answer can provide insight NOT necessarily about style but rather their comfort zone, lighting preferences, scale and color palette.

For an example, my favorite  interior is The College Hotel in Amsterdam.  I love the brilliant and clever use of color and texture.  Deep rich colored grass cloth walls juxtaposed with brick walls both accompanied by high gloss black trim.  It’s a space filled with many dichotomies: serious and playful, traditional and contemporary,  cool and warm colors wonderfully mingleing.  I wouldn’t want my home to look like The College but my respect for it reveals my desire for a unique space with clever use of color that doesn’t fit into any mold…
